Window Treatment Answers…and More Answers! What Was the Question?

Each month my super marketing gurus send me a report from Google that details what people that visited this page were actually searching for. Month after month the results are almost identical: protecting your home/furnishings from UV damage and can blinds be cut down after new windows are installed. These two items vie for first and second place almost every month so let’s revisit the subjects again.

There are previous posts below you might want to read but let’s talk about these top two questions that seem to be on everyone’s mind: [Read more…]

Window Covering Safety!

October is Window Covering Safety Month! This is a subject that most of us don’t think about until one of those sad stories pops up on the news: TWO YEAR OLD DEAD AFTER GETTING CAUGHT IN CORDS!

I shudder each and every time I hear one of these stores. While window fashions have become much safer in the last 10 years there are still 6 or so children injured or killed each year because a few simple steps were ignored…and it’s not just children! Our four-legged friends can be at risk as well! [Read more…]

Remotely Simple – Motorize Your Window Treatments

The information age is upon us. When was the last time you walked into a room of teenagers who were using their mouths to converse instead of their thumbs? When was the last time you had to walk across the room to change the channel? The mundane tasks of life grow increasingly easier with every day’s new technological advance.

While you may already be familiar with your garage door opener, the remote for your television, your iPhone, etc., are you familiar with motorized window treatments that you can operate by an app on your phone? Yes, you read that right. Motorized window treatments are the newest addition to home automation – joining the likes of lighting, security, audio-visual, thermostats and more. [Read more…]

The Organized Kid!

Life Without Clutter and Power Struggles!

I’m going to start this article off by asking you to close your eyes.  Yes, you heard me correctly.  I want you to close your eyes and remember back to your kindergarten classroom.  Go!

What did you remember?  It was a colorful space wasn’t it.  There were all kinds of signs and pictures all over the walls.  Did you remember the smell of paste and crayons?  Did you see the cubbies on the walls?  There were toys, and books and sometimes even animals and there were 20-30 kids!

But you’ll also remember that EVERYTHING HAD A PLACE AND EVERYTHING WAS IN IT’S PLACE!  There wasn’t clutter all over the place.  Desks were neatly arranged and each child knew where his/her belongings went when they walked in the door. [Read more…]

Saving $$ on Conserving Energy and Preventing UV Damage

How to Protect Against Damage from the Sun on Furnishings and Draperies by Using the Best Energy Efficient Window Treatments

The saying goes that when The Lord closes a door He opens a window.  Well, that might be great for life’s opportunities but it really can put a hurtin’ on your energy bills, not to mention the comfort of your home!

Every month I receive a report from Google that shows all the terms that people used to search that resulted in them ending up on this blog site.  Month after month there are two search themes that repeat themselves again and again: #1 is how to protect against damage from the sun on furnishings and draperies and a very close #2 is energy efficient window treatments. This Ain’t Your Granny’s Wallpaper!

I have to be honest, I can’t believe I’m writing this blog entry.  I have still not recovered from weeks of stripping wallpaper my mother had installed back in the late 80’s.  While the paper itself was probably not cheap it was not up to today’s standard of strippable papers AND  the preparation of the walls was not properly handled making some rooms a weeks-long ordeal!  Just when I thought I was done I discovered she must have had a half roll left and had the hanger wallpaper the coat closet! NOOOOOOOO! [Read more…]

Home Automation and Window Fashion Motorization

It’s Not Just Convenience Anymore!

Ok, be honest. When is the last time you got out of your chair to change the TV channel?

Or got out of your car to raise the garage door? Gotcha didn’t I?

We all use technology to make our lives simpler, easier, less taxing, and yes, more fun.

The dryer has replaced the clothesline, the dishwasher the dish cloth; remember typewriters and eraser pens? We wouldn’t dream of trying to live our busy, over-booked lives without most of today’s modern conveniences.

Window coverings have joined the techie age with motorized treatments in almost every product category. But with garden tubs in front of master bath windows and two-story family rooms they’re not just for couch potatoes and techno geeks. Motorized window coverings make controlling the light, privacy and security of your home simple and affordable. [Read more…]

Your New Home – Blinds & Shades Are More than just Privacy!

One of the most frequent questions I receive on our blog page is this: “We’re building a new home and I have no idea where to start when it comes to the blinds and how much I should budget for them.” This is an excellent question. [Read more…]

Big Box Retailers or Big Mistake?

It will come as little surprise to my readers that I’ve long held the view that you’re much better off dealing with a professional when it comes to window treatments. I’ve always found that warehouse clubs and big box retailers are terrific if you need 500 rolls of toilet paper or a 50# block of American cheese. However, if you’re researching a product that is primarily a custom order product you may want to avoid the big boxes…and a big mistake. [Read more…]

Replacing Your Windows? Don’t be “Blind” Sided!

Replacement windows are one of the most popular and energy saving home improvement projects.  Every year thousands of Central Ohio residents replace old, drafty windows with new energy efficient windows.  The Federal Energy Tax Credit has kept replacement window companies busy for the last several years.  Recently though, we have received a rash of calls from consumers in Columbus inquiring about having their blinds or shades cut down to fit their new windows.  In a few cases they had just recently replaced their blinds and when the new windows were installed they wouldn’t fit.
